Component surface preparation is the essential first step toward treatment of the surface prior to the application of any coating. How well a coating performs is significantly influenced by the initial component cleaning and surface treatment methods.
FUN FACT
Ironically, Aside from its name being called Sand Blasting, ordinary Sand is the last media to be used due to the discovery of silica that appears when the sand breaks apart upon impact. Exposure to silica dust can lead to the development of lung cancer, silicosis , kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease!!
It is essential that any surface to be coated must be rust free and should have the proper roughness/profile for the material to adhere to. Here at Crystal Corp we pay detailed attention to the surface preparation because experience has taught us that even the slightest trace of common surface contaminates such as oil, grease, and oxides can drastically impair the adhesion properties of a given coating.
The most thorough and efficient method of cleaning components prior to being Painted, Fiberglass lined, or Rubber lined is through Abrasive Blast Cleaning. This method is especially used in applications where oxidation must be removed. The abrasive blast cleaning method consists of impact abrasive particles with high velocity, impacting the surface of the component. The abrasive media is typically delivered through the use of compressed air or high RPM wheels which shoot media at a components surface.
The particle size of the media being used and its composition also play a major role in determining the quality or type of surface finish produced. In addition to a clean surface which is necessary for proper coating, surface roughness is also closely monitored, taking into consideration what type of coating will be applied.
All surfaces are prepared according to The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standards
A white metal blast will remove all coatings, mill scale, rust, oxides, corrosion products, and all other foreign products from a steel surface.
Commercial blast cleaning allows for stains or shadows up to 33 percent of each unit area of surface to remain.
This standard states a brush of blast clean will allow as much of an existing adherent coating to remain as possible and to roughen its surface prior to coating application
Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning provides a greater degree of cleaning than commercial blast cleaning, but less than white metal blast cleaning.
